Aceh Besar – The Department of Biology, Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), successfully conducted its Field Practicum in Lamsujen Village, Lhong District, Aceh Besar, from June 5 to 7, 2026. Carrying the theme “Into the Field, Into Discovery,” the program provided students with an invaluable opportunity to apply classroom knowledge through direct observation and hands-on scientific exploration in a natural environment.

The field practicum is an integral component of the biology curriculum, designed to enhance students’ practical skills in ecological observation, species identification, sample collection, and environmental data analysis. By engaging directly with nature, students gained firsthand experience that complemented theoretical concepts while strengthening their scientific reasoning, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

Throughout the three-day program, students, under the guidance of faculty members and teaching assistants, participated in various academic activities, including biodiversity assessments, ecosystem characterization, flora and fauna inventories, and environmental data collection. The information gathered during the practicum will serve as valuable material for further analysis and research-based learning.

The theme “Into the Field, Into Discovery” reflects the spirit of exploration and scientific inquiry that lies at the heart of biological sciences. By stepping beyond the classroom and into the field, students were encouraged to discover the complexity of natural ecosystems while developing a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and the importance of environmental conservation.

Beyond its academic objectives, the field practicum also aimed to foster students’ character by promoting adaptability, responsibility, collaboration, and environmental awareness. Direct interaction with nature allowed participants to better understand the critical role of biological conservation and the responsibility of future scientists in addressing global environmental challenges.

The organizing committee emphasized that the field practicum represents an implementation of experiential learning, enabling students to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world biological phenomena. Such experiences are expected to strengthen students’ research competencies and prepare them to become highly qualified graduates capable of contributing to scientific advancement and sustainable environmental management.

Through the successful implementation of this field practicum in Lamsujen, the Department of Biology, Universitas Syiah Kuala, reaffirms its commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative, and context-based education. The program is expected to produce graduates who excel academically, possess strong environmental ethics, and have a passion for scientific discovery.

Guided by the spirit of “Into the Field, Into Discovery,” the field practicum became more than just an academic activity—it was a transformative learning journey that inspired students to explore nature, uncover new knowledge, and deepen their commitment to the study of biology and the conservation of Indonesia’s rich biodiversity.
