Banda Aceh – Students from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) have achieved another remarkable accomplishment at the national level by securing Second Place in the National Scientific Writing Competition during the Biology Science Competition hosted by Universitas Mulawarman.

The award-winning team, consisting of Sarah Salsabil, Cut Dhinie Decita, and Naja Luthfia Nuha, impressed the judges with their innovative project entitled “Bio-Responsive Smart Hydrogel Based on Local Seaweed Polysaccharides with an Early Visual Infection Indicator for Diabetic Wound Healing.”

The innovation proposes a novel approach to diabetic wound management through the development of a bio-responsive smart hydrogel derived from locally sourced seaweed polysaccharides. Designed as an advanced wound dressing, the hydrogel not only promotes the healing process but also incorporates an early visual infection detection system, enabling timely intervention and reducing the risk of severe complications.

Diabetic wounds remain one of the most challenging complications associated with diabetes mellitus, often leading to prolonged treatment, reduced quality of life, and, in severe cases, amputation. Recognizing this challenge, the student team developed a solution that combines biomaterial engineering and diagnostic functionality in a single platform, offering a promising strategy for improving patient care and clinical outcomes.

A key strength of the innovation lies in its utilization of Indonesia’s abundant marine resources. By harnessing polysaccharides extracted from local seaweed, the project highlights the potential of biodiversity-based biomaterials for healthcare applications while promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and supporting the development of a bio-based economy.

This achievement demonstrates the research capability, creativity, and scientific excellence of Biology students at FMIPA USK in addressing real-world health challenges through innovative and interdisciplinary approaches. It also reflects the Department of Biology’s commitment to fostering a strong research culture and encouraging students to develop science-based solutions with tangible societal impact.

The Department of Biology congratulated the team on their outstanding accomplishment and expressed hope that this achievement will inspire other students to actively engage in research, innovation, and scientific competitions at both national and international levels.

By earning Second Place in this prestigious competition, the students have once again showcased the potential of biodiversity-driven innovation in advancing healthcare technologies and reaffirmed Universitas Syiah Kuala’s role in producing future scientists capable of contributing to sustainable scientific and technological development.
